Call for Applications: Inclusive Language Study Award (due October 5, 2022)

September 19, 2022 by Department of Classics

The Department of Classics is calling for applications to the Inclusive Language Study Award (ILSA). Applications are due October 5th, 2022. Information on how to apply is below.

Purpose

This award is designed to fund language tutoring for promising students in our language program who require extra support in learning Ancient Greek or Latin. The award is intended to make acquisition of the ancient languages more accessible to students with diverse backgrounds and different degrees of language preparation and to help retain promising students in the language programs.

The award pays for one hour of language tutoring per week for six months. The tutor will be assigned by the department. All further arrangements (scheduling, etc.) will be decided between the award recipient and the tutor.

Eligibility

The award is open to any student in a 100-, 200- or 300-level GRK or LAT class, but priority will be given to students from groups traditionally underrepresented in Classics (including, but not limited to, racialized students, LGBTQ2+, students with disabilities, nonnative English speakers, economically disadvantaged students, and first generation college students).

Process

Students should apply by writing to the Communications and Outreach Administrator, Bianca Viseu (bianca.viseu@utoronto.ca) by October 5. In your letter, list the language class you are currently taking and the name of the instructor. Then in a paragraph explain your academic background and your interest in classical languages, as well as any circumstances you feel are impeding the progress of your language study. If you belong to an underrepresented group (as described above), please include that.

Please supply the name of a past or present university Greek or Latin instructor who can provide a reference for you. (You may want to discuss your application with this person so they know you are applying.) Your language instructor will be asked to supply a letter of support. Applications will be evaluated by the executive committee and the successful applicant informed by October 14.

If you have any questions about the program or how to apply, please contact Department of Classics Chair, Victoria Wohl at chair.classics@utoronto.ca.
