This Seminar will be rescheduled for another date.

The Department of Classics is pleased to welcome Anna-Sophie Meyer who will be leading a seminar on the topic of horror in Ancient Rome.

Between Awe and Fear: Enjoying horror in Roman Antiquity

Modern horror genres (stories, films, video games) are based on a paradox: fear-inducing scenarios trigger positive feelings in people. Fear is mixed with enjoyment, pleasure, excitement, etc. Our modern term "horror" comes from Roman antiquity - but did such a phenomenon already exist? In this talk, I will analyze scary folk narratives, focusing on the feelings that these stories evoke in the protagonists and the audience, in order to define the ancient feeling of horror more precisely, as well as the parameters that make a positive experience of horror possible.
