Description:

Touch is a touchy subject. Literature touches us; but inappropriate touching is a scandal. Aristotle said touch is the only sense animals like us cannot be without. Jesus said to Mary Magdalen  'Don't touch me' — or did he? This talk will look at what ancient religion made of touch, what the difference is between Greek and Latin (and Hebrew) versions of 'touching', and what theologians, poets and artists have made of it since.

Hans Baldung's painting "Eve, the Serpent and Death," showing Eve being grabbed by a skinless man next to a serpent coiled around a tree.
