Biography
Wim Nijs received his PhD in Classical Studies and in Philosophy from KU Leuven and Sapienza University of Rome in 2022. Before becoming a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow in Toronto, he has worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Greek Studies at KU Leuven. He is mainly interested in the intellectual culture and philosophy of the Hellenistic and Roman periods, with a special focus on ancient Epicureanism. He has recently published a monograph on The Epicurean Sage in the Ethics of Philodemus (Brill, Leiden-Boston 2024), and has written several articles and papers, both on the ancient Epicureans and on non-Epicurean authors such as Plutarch and Lucian. His current research project focuses on Philodemus’ Epicurean views on flattery and their parallels in other texts from the post-Hellenistic period.
