The end of July saw Matthew Ludwig become the fourth of our PhD students to have successfully defended this year, with a thesis on “Sophocles’ Conception of Tragic Plot and Character” – congratulations to him, and his supervisor, Victoria Wohl! In April, Elliott Fuller was awarded a doctorate for his work on “the Role of Harbours in Political Economies of the Bronze Age Aegean” (Sarah Murray was his supervisor), as was Gianmarco Bianchini (working with Jarrett Welsh) for his thesis “Constructing Authority in Latin Scholarship”. In November, Naomi Neufeld achieved her PhD writing on “Shipwrights and Shipbuilding in the Ancient Mediterranean, 700-400 BC” – Ben Akrigg was her supervisor. Warm congratulations to all! And best wishes for the future, as Gianmarco goes on to a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Campania, while Matthew takes up a one-year teaching appointment in the Department here.
